Final Cut Pro editing of existing media

Hey everybody, newbie post. I've started using Final Cut Pro to put together some videos involving cuts from multiple professional films. Now, I'm importing the films as 1920x1080 mp4 files. When they are in the preview section it looks great, very crisp as intended. When I put it in the timeline, it doesn't look terrible, but there is definitely some loss in quality.

The thing that is confusing me here though is that when I export, I have tried every possible combination and nothing is adding up to the original quality imported into the project. I've added a letter box effect to the video, but I'm not sure if that would have an effect on the videos quality.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
