Apple TV old generations

Hi, I’m looking for a cheap option to mirror my iPhone on my tv, basically to watch sports streaming from my phone onto my tv. I don’t need all the apps and extras the latest generation apple tv offer and don’t really want to spend the money either. If I bought a 2nd hand 3rd generation or even 2nd generation Apple TV would this all still work? I appreciate these are no longer supported but I’m just looking for a cheaper option. I’m running on IOS 12.1. Any advice appreciated, thanks

I wouldn't advise getting a 2nd gen as it is obsolete and should any issues arise (which is very likely considering it's age) you would have wasted your money.

The 3rd gen is a little newer and should still have some time before you need to upgrade.

Personally I would say go for the 4th gen because it will last the longest and because it has the app store you may be able to view the content directly. It also supports airplay 2, which has a lot of improvement over the original protocol.
