Final Cut pro voice over not working

Hi! I am working on a project in Final Cut Pro. Had to take a hiatus, and after coming back a few months later I see that the voice over is not working any more. Since last time it worked, I have installed MacOS Mojave, but nothing else.

In sound preferences, I can see that my USB mic actually gives an input. In Imovie, i can record voice overs with the same mic.

after checking on the internet, I have tried a few things so far (and they didn't work):

• deleted the preferences (cmd-alt while start up, dialogue came)
• created a new library on the main hard drive (the other projects are on an external hdd, mac os extended (journaled) )
• deleted the app and downloaded it again
• It looks like it is not the mic, as the built-in one also doesn't record anything.
