Camera won’t Flip when using Facetime

Hi. I have an iPad air2 on iOS 12.1.1

When I am using FaceTime and want to flip the camera to use the rear camera image, the insert picture is a frozen picture of me from the forward camera rather than showing the view from the rear facing camera.

The other person on facetime can see the image from the rear camera - I just can’t see the rear camera image on the small inset “picture in picture” view - I can only see a frozen image of me! I hope this makes sense as I am not very tech savvy!

This issue has has not been resolved with the last update of iOS 12.1.1....any ideas of how to fix this issue?

Just wonder if anyone with FaceTime rear camera issue has tried some other video call app like Skype etc.? This may provide some more info on this issue: if the other video call app functions correctly for the rear camera, it’s definitely related to the FaceTime, meaning iOS (FaceTime app). But if it encounters the same issue, it may be caused either by the iOS (rear camera part of the software), or rear camera hardware/firmware issue.

I have the same problem ever since iOS 12+. Usually the picture freezes, sometime facetime crashes and rarely it works as it is supposed to.

I have tried backing up the ipad, then reset all settings, then reloaded everything from backup - no help.

Then I tried deleting facetime, turning facetime off in settings, then backup, then reset all settings, then reload from backup - also no help.

I have an iPad air MD786LL/A.

I would appreciate some interest in this problem from Apple itself.

Anyone else with any ideas?

Thanks.

I'm back.

Thanks to those of you who have given me feedback. Unfortunately I have tried "General/Reset/Reset All Settings" twice and it did not fix the problem. I am unwilling to buy a new iPad. For what I paid for my iPad it should work perfectly under all circumstances. I hope that some future update fixes the problem.

I have the same issue (frozen image when switching to rear camera) with my iPad Mini 3. Problems started with iOS 12+. My parents have the iPad Mini 2. They had no issues until I stupidly asked them to update to iOS 12+.

One work around has been to start Facetime with the rear camera already enabled. That seems to help things. However recently (I believe I updated again - in hopes things would be fixed), my workaround didn't help and instead now causes Facetime to crash and close.... sigh...

to build on previous responders: You can reset the settings on iPad by going to:

GenerL/Reset/Reset All Settings

this will not erase data and only settings.

However I advice you to backup your iPad first. You can do this though iTunes by connecting to your computer or iCloud by clicking on your name in the top of settings and going to backups and slecting back up now while you are connected to Wi-Fi
