No Message Alerts on iPhone While Using Mac

As the title suggests, when I'm using my Mac, my phone doesn't light up when I get a text message. If i lift it, the notification is there on the lock screen but no sound was made and the screen didn't light up until I checked myself. When I close my laptop, the notifications work on my phone again. It's as if it knows (obviously) that I'm using the Mac and decides to not bother me. But I want it to bother me. How to fix this-without turning off Handoff or something of that nature.

Correct. That's the way it works. You can't fix what isn't broken.

If you do not want it to do that, then you need to disable Handoff as explained in Use Continuity to connect your Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch.
