Mounting an external drive that Finder sees but Disk Utility does not

I successfully mounted the NAS (Synology 5-disk array) on my network on my new Mac Mini running Mojave on the first try. The next time I tried to access it, there was a message that there was a problem with the alias, so I deleted it and tried to re-mount it. Now I get the error message -8060, that the operation cannot be completed. I see the NAS in Finder both as a location and on the network, and can access files from it, but it doesn't show up at all in Disk Utility. My iMac running High Sierra has no problems with this drive as a volume, so I suspect it's a Mojave issue.

Disk Utility will recognize physically attached drives whether by Thunderbolt or USB interfaces. Drives that appear on the Desktop (and inherently in /Volumes) that are the result of network AFP/SMBn mounts will not appear as accessible drives in Disk Utility.

I am using Mojave 10.14.2 with a Synology Diskstation, and it works just like it does on High Sierra 10.13.6. A single mount point appears on the Desktop (and within /Volumes) but certainly not in Disk Utility — because it is not physically attached. I don't see this as a Mojave bug.

When I click on the Finder sidebar Shared section, and the DiskStation entry, there is initially a Finder window of various folders that appear — but nothing mounts on either the Desktop or in /Volumes yet. Only when I double-click one of those folders, will it present that selected folder name in a Finder window, and as a Desktop network drive icon. I have a smaller Synology unit with two internal drives that is not configured as an array.

You manage the drives from the Synology DSM software, not from the Mac side with Disk Utility.
