imovie crashes large file

Want to edit 2 hour, 5GB video with iMovie but it beachballs and becomes unresponsive, even if waiting several minutes before trying anything. Activity monitor does not show high CPU or disk usage nor RAM overload

Using 2017 iMac with most recent Mojave update

iMac Line (2012 and Later)

Hi, Billy,

Freezes can occur with large projects that stress the processing power of the computer. You might have an older computer or an i5 processor, or perhaps the resolution of the clips is high like 4k.

What many users do in that situation is to split up the project into segments at logical points, and edit each segment in its own separate project. Then you can share out the projects and join them together in a master project that you can share out for your final. There are different workflows that you can use, but the concept is to edit 3 or 4 smaller projects rather than one large project.

To test, try duplicating your project and, working with the duplicate, delete the last 2/3 of it and see if you can edit without the freezing occurring.
