Stabilization vs. Cropping

I have several 4:3 clips where the stabilizer crops aggressively to 16:9 in the middle of the scene. But I need more control over the cropping, like to the top or bottom or even keyframed.

FCP won’t let you change the order of Stabilize and Crop, so once stabilized you can’t access the original scene outside of its cropped view. That is, Crop and Transform will only bring in black areas if you try negative values.

Since you can’t stabilize a compound clip I assume the only way to do this is to crop first, export/import that clip again and then stabilize it.

Is there any other way?
