how can I uninstall Epic Games Installer. My daughters installed it with Fortnite about 3 days ago, and I cannot close, quit or move to trash (says it's open after you click quit) or right click and delete (it doesn't show anything on Right Click.

Even when I restart the computer after deleting the download, I'm just rewarded by having a second Epic Games icon on the bottom of the screen. Please help. I'm told one is redirected to sites that promise "currency" to download files, but my daughters aren't sure what they did. Please help, as all the advice I find seems to center on "move to trash" or right-click.

Basics for Uninstalling Software

Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them at the above location and delete them, too.

Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. If you cannot find the uninstaller then you could download the freeware, Easy Find, to locate files that need to be removed. The places you need to search include:

  1. /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. Check if the application has created a folder then delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.
  2. Applications may install a startupitem or a LogIn item. StartupItems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder or the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Login Items are set in the Users & Groups preferences.  Open it in System Preferences, then click on the Login Items tab.  Select the item from the list and click on the Delete [-] button to remove it.
  3. Some software use startup daemons or agents.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.

Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.

There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:

For more information visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on removing software.

Contact the games developer if you need additional help getting rid of it. To stop the program from running try CTRL- or RIGHT-clicking on its Dock icon then select the Quit option. If that doesn't help open Activity Monitor in the Utilities’ folder and follow instructions:

Use Activity Monitor to Kill Runaway Processes

Use Activity Monitor on your Mac

Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity.

I would give MalwareBytes Anti-Malware for Mac a try. They likely downloaded Adware by downloading Fortnite from an illegitimate site.

When you search for software, you will be directed to these crapware sites that bundle Adware with the downloads.

You need to teach your daughters that the Mac App Store and the developer's website are the only places to download software.

Thanks, Kappy, this has largely solved the problem. I deleted the files in "Login items", perhaps incorrectly, then killed about 4 more files found under EasyFind. At the end, there was still one Epic Game Launcher, but it didn't seem to launch the programme, and it retains an icon on the Launchpad next to Fortnite and Roblox on my Mac. Do I need steps to remove these icons to prevent a recurrence, and if so what steps?

Or should I just relax and be happy that it's not launching?

Many thanks

For some reason Apple does not want us to remove apps from the Launchpad. If you click and hold on a Launchpad icon they will start to jiggle as they do on your iPhone. A circled "x" will then appear in the upper left corner. Click on it to remove the app and its icon. Unfortunately, this will not work for apps you did not get from the App Store. But give it a try. If the app is not in the Applications folder then at some time it may disappear from the Launchpad.

Thanks, Kappy. Somehow Epic Game Installer is showing in a group with Roblox and Fortnite, and holding the cursor on it makes it flicker, but no x appears as you suggest may happen, and it won't allow itself to be moved to trash.

I suppose that's okay, my girls still can play Roblox. I've told them to steer clear of Fortnite for now - reading what was said before people don't seem to worry about Fortnite per se but about sites one is directed to that may corrupt. So I suppose let them put on Fortnite in a few months, or what do people think?

Thanks.
