How long should it take my MacBook Air to Backup to an external hard drive

Depends on how much is being backed up, how long it has been since the last backup, and how much space is empty on the backup drive. Under normal circumstances, a backup should take a few minutes - more when there's a lot to back up. But there are times when the process becomes more involved, such as when the drive has to be reindexed because a lot of time has passed since the last backup or when the drive is getting full.
