iPhone XS Max Camera 'ghosting' issue? (lens glare/lens flare)

I recently upgraded from an iPhone 6s Plus to the new iPhone XS Max, unfortunately I have noticed a weird issue with what I call 'ghosting' in the camera.

I know you can get some glare in the camera when looking at certain lighting etc (the green dot) but this seems extremely worse, when taking photos of things like Christmas lights, I am getting an upside down 'ghosting' effect in the camera, I can't really explain it well in text, but I have included a short clip of the issue on imgur.com

I have also noticed that night time/low light photos are extremely soft, and almost look like they have a bad 'painting' filter applied to them...

Is this normal for the XS Max camera? :-(

Many thanks, Dan Mumford.

It's simple optics. You have a physically tiny lens that, by its very nature, is susceptible to flare (and other imperfections).

As far as comparison with SLRs is concerned, yes lens flare can happen under the right circumstances but, with a quality lens and a lens hood, it's not very likely. Many years ago, I took some pictures with deliberate lens flare that encircled a trapeze artist. In fact, I won some money in a contest with that shot.

yeah but this is happening without intention. and this is where the issue lies. If I wanted this effect I'd intentionally do so. Not every outdoor picture failing miserably because a green light or ring forms when I'm aiming ANYWHERE near the sun. Apple created what can be classified under their limited warranty as a "manufacturer's defect. This means you can take your phone in and they have to repair, reimburse, or replace the product. In fact, that's what I'm about to go do today.

Ok, so we need to stop calling it lens flare.

I have NEVER, EVER had 'lens flare' like this with any of the multiple cameras or smart phones I've owned!

Do a search for lens flare on Google and you will see it's an entirely different effect.

This is not lens flare, but a ghosting effect.

Apple should be doing something about this, it's their top of the range device costing $1,200+ and it produces terrible results. 🤔

They also need to give an option to turn off the awful 'smoothing' process. 😵
