Can't mount a new .dmg or .cdr image?

Insert an Audio CD.
Open Disk Utility and make a New Image for that disc. Either a .dmg or .cdr file will appear, depending on the format you choose.
Now try to open that file in the Finder. I get "No mountable file systems."
Now try the hdutil attach command in Terminal. Same error.

I'm on a new iMac Pro running Mojave 10.14.2. I've never had trouble opening disk images before.

What's going on, Apple?

Really? That's not always true, so stop pointing it out. It was a rhetorical question anyway. So if you don't have anything to contribute, then please don't bother posting.
