2018 Mac Mini - monitor problems

I have a new 2018 Mac Mini (running OS 10.14.2) which is connected to a LG 24UD58 monitor via a USB3 to DisplayPort cable.

When I shut down the Mac and then try to start it up again, the monitor is blank and does not appear to be receiving a signal from the Mac. I had the same problem when using another monitor (my old Dell U2312HM) using the DisplayPort cable.

When I connect both monitors (the LG via Display Port; the Dell via an HDMI), I am able to shut the Mac down and then start it up again, with both monitors working.

There are other users with similar problems.

Is there any fix?

many thanks

The Mojave 10.14.6 update appears to have resolved the issue for me. Before the update, I sometimes (but not always) had to press the power button on the Mac Mini (i7 16G 1TB) a couple of times (one press for 1 second & release, then a quick second press & release) before the Mac would recognize the monitor (an LG 34" HDMI connected). After the 10.14.6 update I haven't had to go through that rigamarole again. The Mac is recognizing it every time now as it should.

I'm afraid you mistake two different things. Yes, I believe there are people/algorithms busy with tracking/deleting posts here and if there is something not so pleasant about the company with the fruit they delete it. They deleted my post (without any notice) when I wrote that I've returned my Mini to get money back. But the fact that there is moderation on this forum doesn't mean anything regarding anybody of the engineers listening and thinking of the solution of your problems.

It would seem a lot of people are of the voice that it affects only LG monitors. I don't know if I am the only one on the planet. But my monitor not connecting to my 2018 Mac Mini i5 was an Asus VA325H 1920-1080. It was very difficult to boot up or reboot with out loosing connection to monitor. It would just say no signal. But it was not LG. With that being said, I will also point out that I ended up going to Beta Catalina a while back and presto, problem gone. Then I heard of a Mojave update that came out that a lot of posts said fixed their problem that was same as I had. Next after being on Bata Catalina for a month they had an update and my Firefox would only crash after. So hearing problem seemed to be fixed on Mohave for so many, I decided to go back to it because Firefox is my browser. And low and behold my monitor still worked perfect. Things are how they should be. I have been back on Mohave for about a month now trouble free. To paranoid now to update now that Catalina is out now. As some people are now saying problem that seemed to be fixed came back after update to Catalina. Have no idea why my problem has been fixed, but I just wanted to put that out there for others. But please, anyone else who had this problem not running LG monitor, could you please let me know. Like I said mine was Asus and I had trouble with new Mac Mini for over 7 weeks before I got lucky for what ever reason. Thank my lucky stars.

That sounds like a B.S. answer fro a Apple tech who just wanted to end the support call because he could not figure out the answer .

My mac Mini on Mojve worked perfect on a Samsung 1080 p Monitor from 2006 . And worked perfect on my LG monitor until the change to Catalina .

I had one Tech suggest that my Brand new Mac Mini which is three weeks old needed to be traded in to the next model in order to work . I think the Techs in the stores and on phone support have not a clue to what is going on .

I saw on the news today that Apple finally made a statement about the iPhone and Ipad os that has problems and asking everyone to update to cure it .

A clean install of Catalina had left me with a pink-purple start screen after shutting down. An "Out of range" message would appear and the image would look normal after logging in. After the October 15 supplemental update, I'm back to blank. No starting Apple logo and resetting the PRAM is necessary to start from power off. I'm keeping the Mac mini eternally asleep, for the moment.

To those wondering if this is exclusively an LG issue or a 4k issue, it's not. I've had this issue with:

  • My current LG 27UK850 4K monitor. It woke up after shut-down with some versions of Mojave, but not with others. Not in Catalina either.
  • A Samsung 1080p TV, which has been connected to my STB through HDMI for years. Same with Mojave (it worked with some versions). I haven't tried with Catalina.

Encouraged by @eiskarlsson's experience I installed LG's OnScreen Control software to try to update the monitor's firmware. Mine doesn't seem to have the option, as I can only see a desktop-arranging menu.

I can appreciate the bravery of those going the route of dongles and adapters. I won't go that way, this is a brand new monitor with LG's supplied HDMI cable and a relatively new Mac that has worked before with previous macOS versions. It should work now if the issue was identified.

And receiving the answer that only LG's Ultrafine 4k or 5k monitors are the supported ones because they're featured on the Apple Store is simply unacceptable in my opinion. That's why we have standards like HDMI, otherwise this industry would be chaos.

System: Mac Mini (2018) /Monitor: LG 27UK850-W 27" 4K UHD/cable USB-C <--> USB-C, came with LG monitor.

OpSys: Catalina 10.15 (19A602) with the recent update.

  1. SSD sleep, monitor in power-save: press any of shift/control/option/command once: OK, wakes up & can login.
  2. Restart--> proper boot up apple image, OK & can login.
  3. Big surprise! Cold boot--> proper boot up, apple image, OK & can login.

I have no idea what caused this to behave like a real computer & monitor for a change. I hope it lasts.

I am experiencing this issue as well: My 2018 Mac Mini will not drive video after sleeping. I have a Razer Core X with XFX Radeon 580 card. I have a lower-end display, an HP 24f, which is 1920 by 1080. When I first got the computer in the summer, I was able to use both HDMI out of the Mac Mini, as well as the eGPU, without issue.

In the last week, I've found that returning to the Mac after leaving it to sleep results in no video being sent to the display. Sometimes, changing from the eGPU to the Mac's HDMI port worked; other times, however, the display would display a message that there was no input and would sleep. Rebooting usually solves the issue, but once the Mac sleeps, I return to an unusable setup. I can often reboot the machine using the screen sharing feature from another Mac, so it's not that the Mac Mini has crashed.

I know the subject of this discussion is on the 2018 Mac Mini, but I have an older series Mac Mini with the same issue. I've given up trying to use the internal HDMI to drive a 4k monitor and use a displayport ( old Mac Mini ) to HDMI. I'm really frustrated and assumed that I should upgrade to a new Mac Mini as this would/should have been fixed. But from reading this thread, apparently not. The strange this is that if I try the internal HDMI, the initial boot up screen is in 4k !!, but once the OS is running, it refuses to stay in 4k. Using the displayport to HDMI it both boots and runs in 4k.

Yes, it's a 2014. Yes it's not displaying in 4k. The monitor shows the current resolution. During booting I can see a small hi-res apple icon and the display says 3840 x 2160, but just before the log in screen it drops to 1920 x 1080 with obviously larger icons and display. If I remove the HDMI cable from the HDMI port of the Mac Mini and plug it into the displayport to HDMI adapter, the monitor then says 3840 x 2160 and I get my nice high resolution log in screen. I like using the 4k mode, and normally this would produce very small text etc, but I have a 39" monitor.

If I go to Settings>Displays, when using the displayport to HDMI it shows options to scale the display from the native 3840 x 2160 down to a range of smaller sizes. But when I use the Mac Mini native HDMI port, Settings->Displays shows that the native size ( same monitor, same HDMI cable ) is 1920 x 1080. Selecting "scaled" opens up options to scale to lower resolutions, but no way to select anything higher.

I've been trying for 4 years with various options, HDMI cables, software hacks, calling Apple etc, but in the end I gave up. Hoping that the 2018 Mac Mini would fix this, but apparently not.

Yes, it's a 2014. Yes it's not displaying in 4k..........
Hoping that the 2018 Mac Mini would fix this, but apparently not.

Full 4k resolution (3840 x 2160) @ 60hz with tiny icons and tiny text works fine on my Mac mini 2018.

The caveat is you will need to use the USB-C port on the back on the mac mini for display instead of the HDMI port. The HDMI port is broken for most of us here.

In your case you will need to purchase a USB-C <--> HDMI cable. Just make sure it's rated for 4k@60Hz.

I've installed the 10.15.3 update and decided to try dual monitors again. I have two HP 27es monitors. One I have connected via a USB-C to HDMI cable. The other is a direct HDMI connection.

I had the same issue where the HDMI monitor failed to wake up. Last night even after the update the same issue happened again. Had to reboot / disconnect and reconnect the direct HDMI monitor to get it working.

I have been playing with the Energy Saver settings in an attempt to resolve on my own. I have enabled "PREVENT COMPUTER FROM SLEEPING AUTOMATICALLY WHEN THE DISPLAY IS OFF" and "START UP AFTER A POWER FAILURE" only. All other options have been unchecked.

I just got home from work and both monitors woke up when I tapped my keyboard. Not sure if this is a fix or not but wanted to share.

Yes. There's an issue with the USB ports and bluetooth interference. For me, it causes me to lose keyboard and trackpad. I bought a USB-C to USB-3 adapter that seems to have solved the issue.

Mac Mini is a mess and they won't accept returns. How the **** can you discover an issue like this within the 15 day return period? If someone has AppleCare there should be no questions asked especially if you want to spend more money with them on another product.
