2018 Mac Mini - monitor problems

I have a new 2018 Mac Mini (running OS 10.14.2) which is connected to a LG 24UD58 monitor via a USB3 to DisplayPort cable.

When I shut down the Mac and then try to start it up again, the monitor is blank and does not appear to be receiving a signal from the Mac. I had the same problem when using another monitor (my old Dell U2312HM) using the DisplayPort cable.

When I connect both monitors (the LG via Display Port; the Dell via an HDMI), I am able to shut the Mac down and then start it up again, with both monitors working.

There are other users with similar problems.

Is there any fix?

many thanks

I just got my first Mac Mini/Mac Desktop and i'm having the same issues with 4K monitors. After messing with settings and finding out that something is keeping the video card from running, so i decided to turn off FileValut. Reason why did that because it seemed weird the monitors wouldn't come on, but when i first set it up the MacMini and rebooted a few times it worked perfectly. The only thing i did after setting it up was enabled FileVault. So i powered on my Mac and waited a 30 seconds then clicked my mouse and type in my password like i always do on my MBP. That worked and i was able to see it fire up and my displays worked.

So disabling FileFault is what I did but its for sure not the most ideal fix. I would love to have my hard drive encrypted, but it resolved it for me for now. Guess i'll have to use another way to encrypt the hard drive to see if that breaks it as well. Thought i would share that with anyone that is wanting to test it out.

That's what I was told the first time I called too, they wanted me to take a brand new, not working properly computer since day 1 computer to the mall to be fixed 45 minutes away. Then after fuming for 30 minutes I called back and got someone who actually helped me. I was able to have a second one shipped to me (had to pay for it) and sent the original one back for credit. Unfortunately the second one was the same as the first so that one ended up going back as well. I don't have time for those kinds of problems on a brand new computer. My advice... Call back and fight!

I have a similar issue. Very often when the 2018 Mini (10.14.3) wakes from sleep the monitor just displays a fuzzy screen. Turning the monitor off and on again resolves the issue, but that seems like rather an old-fashioned approach. The monitor is a Dell HD IPS panel model U2211H. The connection is via Apple's HDMI to DVI cable. It previously was hooked up to a 2009 MacBook via Apple's Displayport to DVI cable and I never had the problem.

Yeah, I see that too sometimes. THe monitor is 160 DPI or something insane.

It's not the monitor though. I'm using a 4K TV, and if I switch to the TV output, its perfect. Switch back, it's still 160 DPI. For me, I have to reboot the mac, not the monitor, though perhaps if I just restarted the monitor the Mac would reset the connection that way, also.

I fully agree, the problem is not the monitor, it is brand independent and same monitors don't have any issues with another computer, only with the Mac mini. So the problem is the Mac mini 2018 and the only way to fix this, is by Apple releasing a firmware update. It is unacceptable with so many reports about these errors and not only in this forum that Apple is not updating or fixing this!

Exactly the same problem here. It works fine with my dell computer monitor but not my LG43UK6090PUA.

What I'm seeing is that if you select default for this screen and then try to select Scaled (in preferences) OSX will not stay on scaled. The screen was working on scaled and then some how got switched to Default for the screen.

OSX can't seem to remember anything related to this screen. When it was working I would have to reset the scale every time.

So over it.

My 2008 Mac Pro running 10.11.6 AMD Radio HD 7950

HAS NO PROBLEM with this monitor. Its definitely the Mac mini and its OS

Every day I juggle usBC to DP plugs to the two monitors... one lg 4K and one Samsung 2560x1440. That place g and unplug process usually resets and allows the mini to see two displays. Then, I juggle all the windows onto correct screens.

it is always a guess which screen, if either, will be recognized after 12 hours of sleep. Over the past week, the 4K display gets to be the sole screen at startup... two weeks ago, it was the other screen. Go figure. Three weeks ago, the external tb3 drives would not boot.

i double checked apples web page yesterday, and they still say mini 2018 will drive two screens. I don’t believe they actually tested such configurations, as the current mini 2018 is certainly not ready for prime time reliable service in this regard

with no fix, this mini is going back to apple once the latest iMacs become available.

Can an somebody ask apple publically this morning what they are doing to fix this horrible situation?

I'm having the same problem. No video is sent to my dual NEC PA271Q monitor setup through a single USB-C (Thunderbolt 3) connection. The monitor reports no video when the computer boots up, then goes dark, but is obviously getting a signal for things like the monitor's USB hub, etc. When I wake computer, from sleep mode, all is working correctly and monitors come to life.

Equipment:

2018 Mac Mini (optioned out)

Dual NEC PA271Q monitors connected with single (short) USB-C cable directly from Mac Mini and daisy chained with display port cable to second monitor

Mac OS 10.14.3

After upgrading my Mac Mini to OS 10.14.4, and then shut down, the mac will not boot up at all. No screens show anything. This repeats itself after juggling usb cables, slimming down to one only monitor, removing all external hard drives, etc.

The blue light goes on, the machine sites there with blank screens for a few minutes, and then the mini self shuts down (blue light goes off).

10.14.4 is no fix... it has made the problem worse.

I have Thunderbolt Display 2 and I bought my mac mini 2018 on February. Since the update 10.14.4, when i connect the display port on one of the the Thunderbolt 3 ports (with adapter) the Mac-mini just restarts. I tried the same monitor on my macbook pro late 2011 and it's working normally. If i turn on the Mac-min without the monitor plugged in and access it with my iPad using any remote access like Team Viewer, it works normally. when i try to plug the TBD on the USB-C port again, the Mac-mini freezes and restarts.

Tried to reset the SMC, no success. Tried other monitor in the HDMI port and it worked normally. It was working with the TBD2 normally before the update. I'm with the 10.14.4 update running and I'll will try to downgrade to 10.14.1 to see this solves the problem.

I have 2 LG 55in TV connected via USB-C to HDMI. One screen connects with no problem but the 2nd requires restart and PRAM reset to get it pick up. We have applied the 10.14.4 update but no luck with this. This issue is not fixed. Called APPLE and they want me to contact LG, buts it not an LG problem. The computer will connect individually just not together with 2 monitors.

Mar 28, 2019 12:43 AM in response to Jez2007

10.14.4 made it worse. External Acer screen no longer works. Mac mini failed to boot at all with 2 monitors, whether usbc or hdmi.

after many restarts, plug pulling, pvram resets, using a single monitor, a installation screen came up that required me to turn FileVault off. I did so, and then mini did start up. But I have zero confidence it will start tomorrow.

wasted 90 minutes this morning to boot up mini that should have taken a minute.

this is totally unacceptable.

i am calling apple tomorrow to start a refund claim. I suspect it will be a fight. This mini simply does not work as advertised.

apple quality is not good.... not reliable.... and the claim by apple that 10.14.4 fixed this is clearly wrong.

grrrrrrrrrrrrr
