I'm preparing to sell my 2012 iMac with a 1TB HDD. When I use DiskUtility to erase the drive, no matter what level of security I choose the operation finishes in less than 10 seconds. That is, it cannot possibly be securely erasing the drive. (It's probably not relevant, but I'm choose simple APFS. There are no HFS options.)
What's the problem?
I rebooted the iMac again, and this time it elected to do Internet Revcovery Mode, with the old formatting options available and the ability to securely erase. I've been using Macs since 1984, and I understand less about how they work with eacy OS iteration.
