Factory Resetting an iPod Touch 2nd Generation

a friend gave us a 2nd Generation iPod touch and we can't use it as we don't know the passcode and it is now disabled. I try to connect it to iTunes but I get the message "iTunes could connect to the iPod touch "William's iPod" because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the iPod Touch before it can be used with iTunes". I have scoured the internet and tried multiple configurations of holding down multiple buttons at the same time and I can't get the device to start the factory reset process no matter what I do. Any help anyone can suggest would be welcomed and thanks in advance for any suggestions!

After multiple tries this is what worked for me:

I just did this and it seemed to have worked:

1) Completely turned off ipod while connected to iTunes.

2) Held home button down AND USB plug at EXACTLY the same time until the USB cable and iTunes picture appears on the ipod.

3) iTunes showed the restore option

4) Performed full restore

Thank you. Yes, I have asked William and he doesn't remember he passcode he put in there 5 years ago. I have tried the article you recommend and when I push down the power button and the home button while the device is connected, I don't get the recovery screen to come up. I have tried this multiple times without any luck.
