if playback doesn't begin shortly, try restarting your device

I get this message several times a day and all I can do is restart my iMac and the videos and music play for a while and I get this message again. As of this time without restarting my iMac I can't play anything out of iTunes

Download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

I personally had this same error message with youtube and vlc player. I tried the standard restart, cleared my cache and installed firefox and Chrome to try another brower. That didn't work...

However I realised that I had customised a multiple output device in the computers Midi Settings earlier.

So as soon as I returned the sound to Macbook speakers the problem was solved and the videos played.

Hello ezjhaz.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

If I'm understanding correctly, you are experiencing playback issues with iTunes. I will be glad to help.

Let's try safe mode and also test in another user account to help isolate and possibly resolve this. Here's how:
