Hello catharyn241,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! I understand that you are unable to take a photo in Portrait mode using the rear camera on your iPad Pro. I would be happy to help provide additional information about this behavior.

With the iPad Pro, Portrait mode is only supported using the TrueDepth Camera. View additional Tech Specs for your iPad Pro here:

The following support article provides additional information about taking photos with the camera on your iPad:

I agree, I spent ages trying to work it out only to finally realise you can’t use rear facing camera. Why call it Portrait mode? It’s Selfie mode! What a waste of time and effort and no specific user guide for the newer camera settings on the iPad Pro 12.9.

i also took ages trying to find HDR only to finally see it was in Smart HDR which disables the HDR icon on the camera.

Apple has always made sure that the camera, in ANY iPad model, does not do everything a higher end priced iPhone camera can do.

Apple has never put ALL top iPhone camera features into ANY iPad, to date.

It has only been since 2016, that iPad Pro models have been getting some of the better, higher end iPhone camera features.

Apple and most iPhone users, for some strange reason, feel that we iPad users shouldn't be using the camera features on our iPads and shouldn't be shooting images and videos using our iPads.

For 6 years, Aple gave iPad users very crummy hardware camera features with minimal iOS software camera features.

I have always disagreed with this Apple philosophy about using iPad is a large screen camera/video camera.

This only started to change just in mid 2016 with the 9.7 inch screen iPad Pro.

My 2015, 1st gen iPad Pro, for instance, only got a 8mp rear camera with NO LED flash with the same crummy 1.2mp front facing FaceTime/selfie camera they have been using in normal iPads for 8 years and still use in the low priced 5th/6th 9.7 inch screen iPad models.

The 1.2 mp front facing camera is really abysmal and Apple really should just stop using this in ANY iPad model.

It is 2012 technology.
