I just got a refurbished iphone 7 + My old android does not charge so I wonder if I can transfer my contact info to the phone from my macbook. I admit that I have never used the iCloud and that I need step by step instructions at this point. Not a smart phone wiz.

Using iCloud is a good way to keep your contacts in sync. Take a look at this and the links included in the kb article. You will need to sign into iCloud on both devices in order to do this.

The support article says to update to the latest version of macOS, but you can sync your contacts if you are running Yosemite on your Mac. My daughter is running 10.10.5 and it works fine for her.
