Automatically Sync when iPhone is connected grayed out

I have the exact same problem, an s6 phone but had to recently install Office 365 on windows pc. Now cannot get outlook calender to sync with iPhone.

But also found I have the automatic sync option greyed out. The recommended answer in this community talks about icloud music. no I don't use that, so that answer does not apply.

I think that reason that auto sync option is grayed is because it was set to do that in your iTunes preferences.

Without connecting your phone phone to your PC, launch iTunes and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices. Look at the box that says Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically. If the box is checked, uncheck it, click OK, quit iTunes and then connect your phone and see if your phone automatically syncs.

Allen,

thanks for your reply. This article is about using iCloud to manage mail, contacts and calender etc. I havent used iCloud previously, and don't want to try a new system. I installed windows 10 and subscribed to office 365 last week. Up to then my previous versions worked well and easily; I plugged in my iphones, they opened the iTunes and synced the calender - why that does not happen with the latest versions is frustrating. I have read the several threads from various sources about what to do, and the attached screenshot, indicates it SHOULD sync with outlook. but doesn't.
