Restoring iPhone 6s, I'm stuck on the "Press home to upgrade" white screen with a broken home button.

I've tried a lot of solutions suggested with some googling.

  1. Restart it a bunch of times.
  2. Restart it while holding the power button.
  3. Restart it while holding the power button and holding the volume down button.
  4. Restart it while holding the power button and holding the volume up button (not really suggested, but figured worth trying).
  5. Restart it while holding the power button for 5 seconds and holding the volume down button for 5/10/15 seconds during && after reboot.
  6. Plug it in and see if ReiBoot for mac recognizes it.
  7. Plug it in and see if ReiBoot for windows recognizes it.
  8. Plug it in and see if RecBoot for windows recognizes it.
  9. Plug it in and see if iTunes for windows recognizes it.
  10. Cry and yell at puppies.
  11. Plug it in to a mac and see if it is under the device tree.

So it seems to me that this is the case. Upon restore, apple products get to a point where if the home button doesn't work, they are barred from restoring. Accessibility settings aren't accessible through the gui, only one screen saying to press a button.

Is this true? Am I missing something? I've tried a bunch of cords which all recognize my Xs, on both of my macs and my windows machines, which all recognize my Xs. But nothing recognizes the 6s at this point of its reboot. It was recognized by at least 2/3 of these devices beforehand. It isn't the port, it is a software problem. How can I fix this? If it involves having to go to an Apple Store, there is a problem with software releases that needs attention.

Hey there, Matt,

Thanks for stopping by the Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you are trying to restore your iPhone but are having some trouble since your Home button isn't working. I'm happy to provide you with some direction.

There are a variety of functions your Home button is used for. In some situations, you may be able to turn on the on-screen Home button for use within the iOS software itself. However, when restoring you need the physical hardware home button if you're trying to force restart, or place the device in recovery mode. If the physical button is required to perform the next steps in your process, you must get the Home button repaired before continuing.

You can obtain information and options to get the Home button fixed by stopping into an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider: Apple - Find Locations, or reaching out to Apple Support directly: Contact Apple Support.

Best.

Thanks for the feedback Jameson,

It is frustrating as a user to have a software decision made and distributed by Apple that requires the most unreliable button on their hardware to be in working order to be able to reset the phone with no other available methods. I'm a big Apple supporter, but when my Google phone and Windows friends say Apple is a scam, I sort of get it for issues like these.

For anybody coming into this thread, the issue is still unresolved for me. I still can't get past that screen. I'll update if I can find a way past it.
