I've been sufferd for this problem for 5 days. I did reset my macbook several times and tried everything I could think of.
I was really in trouble because I'm traveling now and I did all my booking with my macbook. Now I'm back on my feet. I owe it all to you!

I had the same issue, connected to wifi but no internet access. Everyone else in my household connected wiht no issues. After trying the solutions here still didn't work. Talked with applecare and we finally got it resolved. So in case all else fails try this.
click Macintosh HD (I'm on Lion, 10.7.5)
check folder Startupitems(in my case it was empty. If you have files move them to your desktop)
check folder Launchdaemons(move all files to desktop)
Last check folder LaunchAgents(move all files to desktop)
Logout and log back in.
Hopefully your back online. If so you can take the time to put certain files back in the folders to pinpoint which one causes the issue. Me personally I just deleted all the files since they weren't important. They were all updater files for certain applications.

I was working on a older MacBook that would not connect to wireless when I came across this discussion thread. This MacBook would see wireless access points, but would not get an IP address.
I finally got this MacBook back on by changing the computer name: System Preferences - Sharing - Computer name.
Not entirely sure why this made a difference, but immediately after making this change, the MacBook was able to get an IP address.
I had the same problem, and this is what I did:
Go to Network Preferences > TCP/IP
Choose Manual DHCP (instead of the default Using DHCP)
Enter your preferred IP-Address (one that is not taken by any other device, consult your router)
Enter the correct Subnet Mask and Router-IP (again, consult your router's settings)
Click OK, and then Apply
It works for me, and maybe for you too.
Was having this problem with my apt building's Wi-Fi. Could see the signal at full bars but kept getting an error stating that "Wi-Fi has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.201.82 and will not be able to connect to the Internet". Selecting the Manual DHCP and typing in the IP address I was getting when the connection was working immediately fixed the issue.
I had the same problem with mine, and nothing seemed to work. I went into the store, and they gave me a new Mac, and I came home, and the SAME problem occured.
Anyways, I thought it must be my router, even though everything else remained connected perfectly.

Check your router model and look for an UPDATE ON THE FIRMWARE on the website to allow macs to connect, especially if it is a new mac or your first. It took an easy update, my router is Linksys and now I have not had a single problem. I hope this helps.
This is the one I am waiting on. Cox said it could take 48 hours to update the firmware. I've tried a bunch of other solutions here (modifying IP address, proxy server, startupitems, etc.). Nothing works.
Using a 2013 MacBook Air 11" with a Netgear router. 2008 MacBook works fine. Issues are browser ownly along wth iTunes, App Store, a game that connects to the internet. Email works but only the text; images don't load.
