Message list font greyed out

I understand that i can change the message list font but in my case is is greyd out….

it says "system font regular 12 “ but i cannot change it….

how can i change the font size?

MacBook Air (2018 or later)

As per the Mail User Guide that option is only available in classic layout:

Click Viewing and then click the check box for Use classic layout:

Go back to Fonts & Colors to select your font and size:

View in context
