Target Display Mode

I am trying to use target display mode to connect my imac to my macbook pro. I have connected the two using a lighting bold cable. The imac is from 2017 running macOS High Sierra version 10.13.6, and the macbook pro is from 2018 running macOS Mojave version 10.14.2 . When i have the two computers connected I am getting an error on the imac reading "cannot use thunderbolt accessory . Connect accessory to a Thunderbolt port on this Mac. The macbook is charging, but I can not get command F2 to do anything for me. I am using the Mac keyboard that came with the imac.

Macbook (2016 or later)

To my knowledge, a 2017 iMac is later than a Late 2014 iMac, so no, it won't.
