Getting earlier genius bar appointment
I made an appointment for tomorrow but it is too late in day. How can I move it to an earlier time when there is not one listed? Or - can I just show up?

If no earlier appointments were appearing when you made your appointment, and/or if they are not showing now, then there are probably none available. You can try just showing up in case someone cancels or doesn't show but it will probably be a long wait.
You should have gotten a confirmation email, with a link to change your appointment.
From what I have been told they reserve a number of actual appointment slots and a number of “appointments” for walk-ins. You can just walk in and it is first come first serve on those. I can’t tell you how long you will have to wait though?!
Did a manager or executive with Apple tell you this? If not I wouldn't put a lot of faith in it at all. Given that the $29 battery replacement will end in 4 days I would guess they are overwhelmed with reservations. I have seen people line up at the door prior to their opening (the line of people without reservations is often lengthy) who attempt to get service without a reservation counting on people with early reservations not appearing so you could try that. A few people I spoke with (this was on a Sunday and the store did not open until noon) said they got there at 10:00am. If you show up around noon on a workday prior to January 1 I would guess you wait could be anywhere from an hour to not getting helped at all. If you are going in for a battery replacement I would guess it will be close to not getting helped.
