How do I use the f keys (volume, brightness etc.) with a pc keyboard on my MacBook Pro?

I'm using a pc keyboard cause I like the feel better than an apple keyboard, but the f1, f2 etc. keys don't work the way the apple keyboard does. Every article I've found online says to check a box that says something like use the F keys as F keys, but I don't have a check box like that in my keyboard settings.

Use Function Keys as standard keys in specific apps only (No Touch Bar) This question is for MacBooks without a touch bar. I would like to use the F-keys as standard keys, but only when I'm in a specific app (IDE). When I'm not using the app, I'd like the brightness and other keys to remain without dealing with pressing Fn. This is similar functionality to how the touch bar allows you to display F-keys in certain apps.

Brand new apple keyboard but can't see "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys” I bought a brand new apple keyboard with numeric keypad, and want to use the function keys for volume etc, but when I go to adjust the Function keys in system preferences as I had with my old keyboard, "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys” is not appearing at all. See pic. Any ideas why?
