John Lewis is the UK’s equivalent of Sears or JCPenney
UK law insists that the store or retailer is responsible for free warranty for a minimum of 12 months, not the manufacturer. Although Apple could theoretically offer a better warranty, the John Lewis warranty should be good enough and is typically 2 or 3 years for Apple kit. Online purchasers get a warranty email that should be retained!

John Lewis in the UK offer a three year waranty on iPads. This extension is provided by John Lewis - giving an additional 1yr on top of the two-year statutory warranty that applies to all products sold within the EU.
Whilst the John Lewis extended warranty would not be honoured by Apple Stores, any product sold by Apple within the EU (as the retailer) would be valid for two years.
Who is John Lewis? Is he an Apple Authorized seller? Or did you just buy this from some guy named J Lewis who lied and told you it had such a lengthy warranty?
All iOS devices have a default one year warranty with Apple. That warranty starts on the day of original retail sale, even if the device is never even turned on. A single additional year of coverage can be added within 60 days of purchase (from Apple or an Apple Authorized seller) with the purchase of AppleCare+.
There is not and never has been any 3 year warranty option for any iOS device.
As with any [approved] third-party retailer, they will either have their own service department - or will have an arrangement with an Apple approved repair centre. John Lewis, within the UK, is a major retailer of Apple products.
If they told you that, it is an in house warranty.
It has nothing to do with Apple.
My apologies if my response to the supplementary question was not entirely clear - thank you for linking to the official Apple policy.
I believe this is the most relevent passage regarding the sale of AppleCare:
In most cases, if you purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan at the same time as your Apple hardware from the Apple Online Store, the Apple Retail Store, and select Apple resellers, you will not need to register it as your AppleCare agreement will be automatically registered.
Perhaps the key operative words here are “select Apple resellers” - which, as it happens, does includes John Lewis (although not available for purchase from them online):

Yes, I don’t know that any authorized seller is required to sell AppleCare+ products, just that they can if they wish to do so. And some are, let’s say a bit lacking in truth and honesty about it, especially if they offer their own extended warranty or insurance (e.g. BestBuy has been accused of pushing their Geek Squad warranty without even acknowledging that they do indeed sell AppleCare+ as well).
It is one of those instances where buyers need to do their homework beforehand and know what a seller offers, even if they have to ask repeatedly for it when the seller insistently keeps pimping their own extended warranty or insurance. Extended warranties are huge cash cows for resellers (and IMO, a horrible choice for consumers - I do not purchase them, with anything), so everybody wants to push their own deals on them.
Yes, Apple do offer the option of purchasing Apple Care plus, but as with anywhere else, only where Apple themselves are the retailer.
Thanks for the clarification. I wish people would give a country location when they throw out a vendors name. This is an international forum after all, not a local chat channel.
We used to be able to choose to display our home nation by our user name - that would be nice to see reintroduced.
Oh, and there is no more Sears in much of the USA - they’ve shut down the majority of their stores years ago now.
Like how will this UK John Lewis do warranties dealing with Apple products? Like do thry have technical know how “fool around” with iPads, iPhones?
So somebody buy ipads in UK Apple Store with Apple Care Plus, would get 4 year warranty? Or no such thing?
Not true. Any Apple Authorized reseller can sell AppleCare+. Here in the USA Bestbuy sells it, Walmart sells it, Verizon, Sprint, AT&T all sell it.
Also, anyone buying from an Authorized seller can add it from Apple online anytime within 60 days of purchase.
If John Lewis is an Apple Authorized reseller, then they too can sell AppleCare+ with their Apple products.
