iMovie -- creating a menu for a DVD?

I'm using iMovie 10.1.10. I'm trying to put together several video clips I just converted from VHS to burn onto a DVD. Is it possible to create a menu that points to each clip? Or should I insert slides at the beginning of each clip with its title? I started working in iDVD (I'm guessing I brought it over from my old MacBook Pro) and realized it no longer had any support available.

Macbook (2016 or later)

Hi, Joanne,

I believe that you are referring to adding chapter markers to your movie that will be access points to the movie in whatever DVD authoring program that you use. When you click on the forward button the DVD player will jump to the next chapter marker, or the chapter markers can be put in sub-menus where you can click on them to access the movie at that point. Is that correct?

If so, unfortunately, iMovie 10 does not have a feature that lets you add chapter markers. iMovie 9 does have the chapter markers feature, but has not been completely functional in the recent iterations of the operating system. If you have a functioning version of iMovie 9 on your computer, or an older computer, you can either make your movie there, and add chapter markers, or you can make your movie in iMovie 10, share out the movie, and import it into iMovie 9 to add the markers.

If you have GarageBand version 6.0.5 on your computer you can add chapter markers there.

iDVD will add chapter markers, and menus, but they only can be added at time intervals, like every 1 second, 2 seconds, 3 seconds and so on. You can't insert them exactly where you want them.

There is an app called MetaDoctor at the online app store, for $4.99, that can add chapter markers to a movie. I am not sure that iDVD will recognize them, but it might be worth a try.

You should also know that iDVD has been becoming increasingly less functional with every upgrade of the operating system. With the next upgrade, iDVD will no longer be supported at all. It still works now, but the themes do not function correctly and there can be rendering and burn issues. You possibly will need to fiddle with it a bit.

The app store offers several DVD authoring programs that you might want to look at. I have not used any of them so cannot make a recommendation.
