CarPlay and Mazda 2018 CX5 - Bluetooth?

Does anyone know whether CarPlay in a 2018 Mazda CX 5 works via Bluetooth or is USB cable dependent?

Also more generally does CarPlay detect and work with more than one iPhone?

Wired CarPlay, should I pair Bluetooth too? I have a wired CarPlay connection in my car. My car also has the ability to pair with my phone via Bluetooth (obviously for phone calls only). If I pair my iPhone with the cars Bluetooth connection, will this cause any issues when I'm plugged into CarPlay? Is the iPhone smart enough to know to use CarPlay for the phone call when I'm plugged into CarPlay and to use the Bluetooth connection when I'm not plugged into CarPlay? Thanks! Larry.
