Can I connect my Macbook air to a monitor and use both screens?

I have a 13 inch 2013 Macbook air and I was wondering if there was anyway that I could connect a basic computer monitor to it and use both screens? I'm taking online classes this term and would like to be able to use google docs for notes on the computer monitor while watching the lecture on my Macbook. I would not have internet connected to the monitor but I am curious if i would be able to drag and drop word documents over to the computer monitor. Please let me know if this could be a possibility! It would be very helpful with my studies. Thank you

MacBook Air

You should be able to. I have a 2017 MacBook Air. And I have a screen connected to the Mac's Thunderbolt port.

Depending on the screen's connector you need a specific adapter. For me I needed a mini display (Thunderbolt connector) to HDMI adapter. So I could plug in my screens HDMI cable. But there are also adapters available for DVI or VGA. Depends on the connection your screen uses.

You'll be needing something like this example Mini DisplayPort-naar-VGA-adapter - Apple (NL) It's the VGA version. But like I said depends on your screen which one you'll need.

When you have your screen hooked up you can set it up in the Display settings in System Preferences. And just drag the required programs to your new screen when you use them.
