2012 MacBookPro SSD upgrade

I have a 2012 MacBookPro (10,1 1.0) with 250GB APPLE SSD SM256E that is almost full between two partitions (OSX, Bootcamp/Windows). This laptop is a workhorse that works as well today as it did when I bought it. I'd like to replace its disk with a larger SSD. I'll appreciate advice based upon your experience of the same on the following:

a- Which make and model of a new SSD (500GB-1TB) would you recommend for good performance and reliability?

b- I have current Winclone Basic License and plan to create a full image backup to restore on the new disk with larger partition sizes. Do I need any other software?

c- Will my OS and application licenses continue to work on both partitions?

d- The current battery runs for about 3 hours. While I have the machine open, should I replace the battery as well? If so, please share your recommendations of a make/model.

It would be helpful if I can be directed to links for instructions for the above tasks.

Thank you.

a) I’ve been recommending Crucial Tech and OWC (macsales) almost exclusively because their tech and customer support are excellent and the products are good.

b) A few years back I used WinClone to backup my Windows partition and it worked wonderfully. The WinClone web site contains instructions for how to proceed

c) After cloning the contents of both your Win and Mac partitions to the new drive some will have to be reserialized and some won’t. I had to call Microsoft tech support for my Windows activation - it was automated and painless.

d) you may notice a small change in battery life but unless your battery is showing the service warning, don’t bother.

There are many different form factors, many different types, and most are not compatible with the Mac you specified.

I would like to have a cheaper one as well, but if the Vendor does not say it will work perfectly, that is not really an option.

The splash page for the 2TB drive shows options for smaller drives at lower prices. I suggest that if you buy their enclosure as well, the old drive will fit in it as a "Utility" drive for future use.

The enclosure will allow you to install MacOS and boot from the drive and set it up completely Before you do any surgery. Then any problems of transplanting "known good" drive inside are caused by surgery, not by a million software issues.

OWC is obviously the most assured upgrade SSD provider however their prices for apparently same capacity drive OWC 1.0TB Aura Pro is more than double of Crucial MX500 1TB SATA 2.5" 7mm ($279.99 vs $134.99). Spec wise, Crucial is competitive in operating performance. I would rather install a Crucial drive if at all possible. Have others succeeded in doing so?

Crucial is very conservative. They also rely on a database of what sales "stick" rather than having a lab full or Macs.

OWC has a lab full of Macs, and can tell you what can be upgraded because they either tired it or developed it.

Standard Storage:256 GB SSDStd. Storage Speed:390/440 MB/s*

Details:This model has 256 GB of flash storage rather than a hard drive. As originally introduced on June 11, 2012, Apple did not even offer a larger capacity storage option via custom configuration. However, starting on August 2, 2012, Apple added the option of 512 GB or 768 GB of storage for an additional US$500 or US$1000, respectively.

*Third-party tests using the Blackmagic benchmark report write speeds of 390 MB/s and read speeds of 440 MB/s.

Apple does not intend for one to upgrade the SSD after purchase, however it is quite possible.
