Brand New Mac running slow

Hi, I have a brand new mac and it is painfully slow?

Every time I open an app, or even clicking the file menu on top of the screen I get the spinning "beachball" for around 15 seconds before anything happens and around 30-40 seconds for an app to open.

Is this normal?

This is my first ever Mac and I wasn't expecting lightning quick speeds but currently my old windows 7 laptop runs quicker than my Mac.

Any ideas?

Thanks

If this machine is only a week old, check the consumer protection laws where you live. See if you can return it.

I have seen other people unhappy with the performance of this particular machine. But your hard drive is half as slow as that other report. I would expect those speeds from a 2008 machine, not a machine purchased in 2018. It is unfortunate that Apple still ships mechanical hard drives, especially slow ones like this. But your hard drive is extra slow. If you can return this machine, do not buy a new Mac without a true SSD. “Fusion” drives don’t count.

And check those configuration profiles. This does not look like a machine that should have configuration profiles installed.

Hi Bob thanks for this. I don't really understand this though as this Mac is literally 1 week old and barely has anything installed on it! Is there something more serious happening here where I should consider contacting the company I purchased it from?

The trouble is that if this is happening after only one week then am I in store for much of the same as time goes on?

Thanks

What is your system drive? A rotating HD? "Fusion" drive? SSD?

There are several possible reasons for slowness. A slow drive is one of them.

You may have a machine with a hardware problem.

Please download the diagnostic tool Etrecheck, run it and post its report here.

If there is a hardware problem, or a software conflict, the report will help us look for it.
