do i seriously have to use music app to buy music now instead of itunes?

I am using the iTunes or Apple store app in my iPad Air 2. When I try to buy a song, I get the message that I must download the Apple Music app to proceed, otherwise I cannot proceed. I have no use for the subscription service and dislike being forced to sign up to buy songs if I want to use my iOS device. Is there a way to do it the old fashioned way WITHOUT the music app?

thanks.

You need the Apple Music app to play the music you purchase from the iTunes Store. That's been the case for as long as I can remember. Using the Music app doesn't require you to subscribe to Apple Music.
