iPhone 8 - iTunes not skipping songs

I'm running iOS 12.1.2 and for some time now I cannot skip songs.


This has been happening for a while now. The 'skip' icons aren't displayed, however the 'rewind / fast forward' 30 seconds icons are shown.


Any ideas how to solve this? I have no idea why this is seen as a good idea or how to revert to the skip functionality. This is really frustrating.

Thanks for the additional information.


Since you are not an Apple Music member, let's check some settings in iTunes for your music.



To start, you can check this on one song that you know has this issue. If this works, select all of your songs and perform these same steps.


If that does not help your issue, I would try reinstalling iOS on your iPhone. While this shouldn’t remove any information, I suggest creating a backup first:


How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support


Then, you’ll want to follow the steps in the article below, under the section labeled “Put your device in recovery mode and set it up again”:


If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support


Let me know if the issue is still present afterward.

Hi Chris,


  1. I'm not a Apple Music member
  2. This happens with every song, whether I have songs, playlists, artists, albums etc selected from Library.
  3. Also Shuffle doesn't work either. See attached, when it's selected the songs still appear in alphabetic order (screen A). When deselected iTunes stops the music and reverts to a 'Not playing' screen.


Again this is proving really frustrating that it doesn't give me much confidence in the product, thus not seeing the point in being an Apple Music member.
