iPhone 7 - I have 'rest finger to open' turned off - Home screen still opens when resting finger on home button.
Why does the phone do what it wants regardless of me telling it to do what I'd like for it to do?

After tinkering with the buttons it seems that the rest finger to open on/off setting is only applicable if you use the power button to wake the device.
If you wake your device with the Home button as I do, then the setting is redundant, you're going to get presented with the Home screen regardless if you leave your finger resting on the Home button, even if you have the setting turned off.
Since it isn't ergonomic for me to wake the device with the power button, I've disabled unlock device with touch ID and reverted to passcode. It takes a couple seconds longer but it's the only way to not be automatically presented with the Home screen if you wake your device with the Home button.
