iTunes is asking me for a backup password which was never set

My partners iPhone 7 has been playing up so we did a backup of it to our iMac and then reset the phone. Tried to apply the backup we did and now 3 hours later we still can’t access it because of a “encrypted password” which neither of us were ever asked to set...

Ive read some other threads but there doesn’t seem to be anything that can help. We’ve done back ups before and have never ticked encryption.

Can anyone help? 😭

I believe there can be a mandatory requirement for encrypted backups imposed when devices are enrolled to business email. Health data would be omitted from the backup if it wasn't encrypted. You are asked to supply a password when encryption is first turned on. I believe it is possible for people to accidentally trigger this and then enter their current computer password, Apple ID, device PIN, some other common password, etc., in response to the pop-up that follows. Having done so there will be no further request or reminder that an encryption password is set, even if the device is backed up to a new computer. The issue only becomes apparent once a restore is attempted.

I have no experience with this but I believe if you have certain kinds of data on the phone such as health data your backups are automatically encrypted. I would expect it to offer you setting a password but I have no hands-on experience doing this.
