Quicklook slideshow full screen images in Mojave

I feel like this should be a FAQ but I didn't find an answer searching the existing discussions.

In previous versions of Mac OS, when I:

    1. selected a group of images
    2. pressed the space bar to go into Quicklook
    3. clicked the fullscreen glyph at top left
    4. used the arrow keys to move through the slideshow

the behavior I saw was that every image would be shown full screen regardless of the pixel dimensions. Small images would be stretched, large images would be scaled down to fit.

This was an incredibly useful and quick feature when presenting images.

In Mojave, I can't get that behavior to show up ever. Occasionally (and inconsistently) the first image shows up stretched to fill the screen.

This is costing me an hour or more a week, hand producing slideshows where I have stretched every image manually.

Am I missing a magic keyboard combination? Or is this just a bad software decision for Mojave?
