what can I use on high Sierra if quicktime isn't compatible?
Mac Pro
QuickTime Player 7 will work just fine in High Sierra.
And Mojave.

Are you familiar with VLC?
It's what I use for all my media playback, and it plays formats QuickTime player never could.
