In addition to kaz-k's comments, if you depend on Microsoft Office, you may want to consider get an Office 365 subscription as it should include any upgrades to Office 2019 as it becomes available.

FWIW, I have been using Microsoft Office since pretty much the beginning. Over time I went from stand-alone purchase to the subscription-based service as it was more cost-effective for my needs. Of course, yours may be different. Regardless, Microsoft offers a number of different subscriptions to choose from.

Alternatively, if you need Office functionality but don't want to subscribe or have a limited budget, there are a number of Office-compatible apps, like Apple's iWork series and other third-party offerings as well.

Office is provided in 2 ways: 1) by subscription or 2) by outright purchase. The subscription version is called Office 365 and you pay by the month or year. You can purchase a subscription for a single person on a single computer or you can purchase a subscription for up to 5 computers and/or 5 different people. As Microsoft updates and adds new features to the Office products subscribers get the new updates. If you purchase it outright you get a single version with only updates, not the new functions.

First, check with the school - many have deals with Microsoft which give steep discounts (all the way down to free) to enrolled students. Second, for Mac users the big difference between the business version and the others is Remote Access and Outlook. Do you need Remote Access? Is Apple's email and calendar program sufficient? Then don't bother with the business version.
