How to truly mute iPad Mini 4

I just got an iPad mini 4 and noted that it does not have a mute switch. From past experience, I know that if you turn the volume all the way down it's essentially the same thing. Unfortunately that isn't proving exactly true. I'm still getting some system sounds like the ping when you use the fingerprint reader to download apps. Is there a way to completely mute the iPad Mini 4?
