Use old iPhone without Apple id

I recently upgraded to a new iPhone (7+) and want to use the old one (6s) as a spare phone for emergencies (with a different sim of course), I don’t need apps. Will it work without me putting in an Apple ID, I don’t want to have 2 phones with the same Apple ID on it. Thank you.

What’s the issue with having two phones with the same AppleID? You don’t have to install or sync everything the new iPhone has linked to that AppleID, but you can certainly use it for just find my iPhone if you’d like. And with it linked to the same AppleID it can be a backup trusted device to receive 2 factor authentication codes if needed.

I hVe two iphones with one AppleID - my iPhone 7 and my old iPhone 5. The 5 is used as an alarm clock and music/audiobooks only and has no SIM installed. It has no other apps, no emails, doesn’t sync anything to iCloud nor backup. The only thing that AppleID is used for on the 5 is so it’s locked to my AppleID via find my iPhone, and so I can access my iTunes and iBookStore purchases.

That same AppleID is used on three other iOS devices and 2 Macs. There really is no reason not to use one AppleID for all your Apple devices for all time.

Should work fine. Just after you erase it and start the welcome setup, just choose not to restore from a backup or other device. Then you can sign in to iCloud (only, not sign in to iMessage or FaceTime etc). Go into the iCloud settings and disable or don’t enable everything other than find my iPhone. Set a screen lock passcode and it’s primed for use by anyone in your family whenever you sign out of iCloud on it to release it for use by another AppleID.

That way you you also don’t have to remember another AppleID password or deal with a separate account’s 2 factor authentication.

If you create a new AppleID then yes you’ll need another email address to do that. And when you use it you’ll create a second iCloud account, another iMessage, FaceTime etc account. Apple service accounts are permanently tied to the AppleID used to first sign in.

You could erase it, set it up as new and sign in with your current AppleID (so its protected by activation lock). Do not enable anything on it other than find my iPhone under iCloud settings and a screen lock passcode. Then, if needed by your wife or son, all you have to do is sign your AppleID out of iCloud on it and they can then sign in with theirs and restore it from their iCloud backup and be up and running with all their stuff (iCloud, emails, contacts, apps, passwords, etc). When they get their device back or a replacement, they just do the same - sign out of iCloud with their AppleID and erase the backup phone. Sign in to their new device with their AppleID, set it up and go.
