Can't send photos through messenger on MacBook Pro running High Sierra

This issue just started a few days ago. In the past, I was able to drag and drop photos and files directly into the Messenger window and send without any problems, but now, when I drag and drop photos there is a white circle that appears in the lower lefthand corner of the image. When I hit send, the recipient receives the text, but not the photo. When I check the "file transfers" window it says, "waiting for 'recipient name' to accept", but the person being texted never received the option to accept or deny. Anyone know anything about this?
