Using USB-C Charger with 10.5” iPad Pro?

Last year an Apple Store Creative recommended a 29 watt USB-C charger & USB-C to Lightning cable to charge my 1st gen 12.9” iPad Pro. It worked great and cut charging time by more than half.

I recently upgraded to a 10.5” 2nd Gen iPad Pro. Last night, the same adapter combo made the 10.5” very hot, and after a full charge, the screen was almost completely unresponsive until I restarted and allowed it a 10 minute rest.

Are there known issues using the USB-C charger with the smaller form factor? I don’t want to put my warranty at risk. Thank you in advance.

The Apple 29/30W USB-C PD charger is safe to use with all iPads (and iPhones) - although only those devices designed to utilise USB PD (Power Delivery Protocol), such as iPad Pro and some newer iPhones, will benefit from fast charging.

“Very Hot” is a subjective term that means different things to different people. That said, your device should never become uncomfortably warm to the touch under any circumstances as serious damage can occur - particularly to the battery.

If your iPad has become hot during charging, this suggests that the iPad or the internal battery has an serious internal fault. For safety, you should stop using the device until it has been inspected and tested by Apple.
