Airport Extreme Screeching

Just today, my airport extreme has started intermittently making a screeching noise and sometimes telling me "it may be overheating". As I researched and read on the web, I turned off file sharing to no avail. Any other advice, other than going to a store.

The internal fan inside the AirPort Extreme is clogged with dust, which results in decreased airflow, causing the power supply to start to overheat.

If the AirPort is less than a year old, take it into the Apple Store and ask for a replacement AirPort Extreme. If the AirPort is older than a year, but less than three.......AND......you have AppleCare in effect on one of your Macs, then the AirPort should be covered for replacement as well.

If the AirPort is not covered by warranty, your only option to solve the issue would be to open up the AirPort Extreme and replace the fan.

Apple considers the AirPort Extreme.....(and other AirPort routers).......to be a sealed unit, so they do not stock any parts for the the products or offer any kind of repair service.

Replacement fans are available from a number of sources. A Google search for "AirPort Extreme fan" will list a number of options.

Be very careful when you open up the AirPort Extreme as it is easy to break a connector or cable in the process.
