How do I backup to an external thum drive
I want to backup to an external thumb drive how do I do this

You don't. You can back it up to iCloud, or you can back it up to your computer using iTunes.
If you back it up using iTunes, you could then more or copy the backup to a thumb drive, but you'll need to put it bak and use iTunes to restore it if necessary.
