MacBook (Early 2016) and dual monitors

I'm trying to connect 2 external monitors on my MacBook using a USB C hub. 1 using HDMI and the other using VGA. When connect both monitors show the desktop but I can figure out how to get display them independently. Any help is greatly appreciated.

MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2016) - Technical Specifications

"Dual display and video mirroring: simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 3840 by 2160 pixels at 30Hz on an external display"

Use external monitors with your Mac - Apple Support

Your MacBook supports only one external display. Your hub will just duplicate its display on a second external display. You can't have two different images on the two external displays
