Time machine back-up

I plan on replacing my 2009 iMac. I have a back-up on a firewire hard drive. Can I keep the old back-up & backup the new machine on the same hard drive without overwriting the old back-up?

You can use the old drive to restore to the new Mac however considering the drive's age I would replace it as it's likely on it's last legs now. To restore, you will need an adapter to connect the drive to the new computer as iMacs have not had Firewire for about 8 years now. Once you have them physically connected open Migration Assistant and follow the on-screen prompts.
