Text Messages app won't open on iMac

I get a pop up notice on my screen when I get a text message, but if I try to open the icon for the app (which is on my menu bar and shows that I have one message), I get an error that the Message app is not responding. If I go to the Finder and try to open it, it says the app Messages is not open anymore. It was working a few days ago.

First step: simply restart your Mac in the usual manner, and determine if that fixes it.

Assuming the Messages app remains unresponsive after restarting your Mac, please determine if the same problems occur in "Safe Mode": Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac.

Needless to say, if you are using any non-Apple "anti-virus", "cleaning", or "Internet security" junk, anything at all in that broad category of useless garbage, don't. A lot of things won't work if you do.
