I had this same problem. Here's how I fixed it:
1) Go to iTunes
2) Go to your account settings (on my version of iTunes, I click my email address in the upper-right)
3) Click the "Edit Payment Information" button
4) Make sure everything is filled out correctly and click "Done"
Now everything should work correctly. Hope that helps!
I Love apple and stand behind their company and products, however the iPhone 4 and this new "verify your account" thing has made me start questioning things...I am not going to change from apple but everyone knows this is happening and there is NO notification about it?! Apple knows who is using iTunes let them Know how to do this!!!
BTW, going to account info and making sure it is correct did not work for me...ugh!!!
I had this same issue. I went into my account info and all my info was set correctly so I hit "done" this did not work... but for some reason going into itunes on my mac and trying to buy a single song prompted a different verification window that asked for my credit cards Authentication Number (the other account window didn't ask for this) I put it in and updated and can now purchase on Apple TV.

I had the same problem. To fix it, I went to iTunes on my Mac, clicked on my email address to get to my Apple Account Information, selected "Edit Payment Information". There, my credit card Security Code was blank. I entered my 3 digit code and hit Done. Then Done again.
I've also noticed the missing security code on my computer after the verification message appeared, (having just changed to my updated debit card details) but re-inserting this didn't seem to consistently fix the problem - now on both my iPhone and computer I get the 'this account has been accessed from a new device, you must verify your details' message - and continue to do so now. I can correct the details and purchase items successfully but on reattempting I need to re-enter the details. This is undoubtedly extremely irritating, but presumably a result if the recent security breaches?
All - I had this same issue tonight with a newly installed Apple TV. After reading through this thread, I took the advice of editing my payment information. That did the trick. Looks like Apple does this to ensure proper access of new equipment. A little frustrating as it was difficult to find support, but eventually I happened upon this thread.
I'm having the exact same problem with all my 4 apple devices. Entering 3-digit security code helps, but I'm surprised no one mentioned that they charge you $1 for this process. I advise you all check your bank statements, apple stole 8$ from me because of this.
That (hopefully) doesn't seem to be the case in the uk, but I'm disappointed that ease-of-use has been seriously sacrificed in favour of a little more security. To verify once would seem reasonable, every single purchase - not so much.
Brand new, out of the box Apple TV. Getting this "you must go to the itunes store on your computer and verify your payment information." message. Confirmed the CC info, still getting it.
So far I am horribly unimpressed, even a bit ****** off.
This is the most disappointed I've ever been in an Apple product.
Same problem here. I swapped out a defective iPod touch and now the new iphone touch is coming up with this message. I go through the whole verification thing and it complains if I don't put in a salutation, but doesn't complain about security code. Eventually it says it failed and try again later.
I tried on iTunes, account, and when I click on payment information is says, "Session timeout", even if I just started the whole process.
Not very impressive. No good error messages.
I was about to do a fresh install of the ipod touch and found this thread. I then put in the security code for my credit card even though it wasn't complaining about it. That seemed to clear it up for me.
I thought Apple could do better.
It does seem like a recent rash of problems. iPhone 4 antenna, this. I also had Spotlight on the Macbook pro hang. I spent hours wading through websites to figure out a solution. Apparently spotlight's index had become corrupted.
