I bought a band for watch 40 and no 42. how can I change it?

Take it back to where you brought it and see if they will exchange it. Ta

If you bought it from Apple in the US you have a 14 day exchange window, other wise follow seanfromllanelli's advice and take it back to the store for an exchange.
